Every bookmaker we review is tested with a real, funded account. We deposit real money, place real bets across multiple AFL markets, time withdrawals, and use every feature we evaluate. This page explains the five criteria we use, how each is weighted, and how the process works.
The Five Criteria
1. Odds Quality (30% weighting)
This is the most important criterion because it directly affects profitability. We compare each bookmaker's AFL odds against the market average across all games in a round, tracking the overround (bookmaker margin) on head-to-head, line, and totals markets. Lower overround means better prices for the bettor. We also check whether odds are competitive on less popular markets like player props and same game multi legs.
A bookmaker that consistently offers 103–104% overround on H2H scores significantly higher than one at 106–107%. Over a season of betting, that 2–3% difference in margin compounds into a meaningful difference in returns.
2. Market Depth (25% weighting)
Market depth measures the range of betting options available for each AFL match. At minimum, a bookmaker should offer head-to-head, line, totals, first goal scorer, and basic player disposals. Top-scoring bookmakers also offer alternative lines, quarter-by-quarter markets, first-to-score props, and a wide range of player statistical markets (marks, tackles, clearances, handballs).
We also assess how early markets are posted (Wednesday vs Friday) and whether markets remain open close to game time. Early posting allows bettors to lock in value before the market adjusts.
3. SGM Builder (20% weighting)
Same game multi builders have become a core feature of Australian betting apps. We evaluate the number of legs available, the range of player prop markets that can be combined, the clarity of the interface, and whether the bookmaker applies excessive correlation penalties. A good SGM builder lets you combine 3–5 legs from a wide selection of markets with a transparent pricing structure. A poor one limits options, applies hidden margin, or crashes when adding complex legs.
4. Mobile Experience (15% weighting)
Most AFL betting happens on mobile, so the app experience matters. We evaluate load speed, navigation clarity, bet placement speed, live score integration, and notification quality. We test on both iOS and Android devices. Key questions: Can you place a bet in under 10 seconds from opening the app? Does the app crash during peak traffic (Thursday night, Saturday afternoon)? Is the interface cluttered with promotional banners, or clean and functional?
5. Payout Speed (10% weighting)
We time withdrawals from request to bank account. The best bookmakers process withdrawals within 4–12 hours. Acceptable is within 24 hours. Anything longer than 48 hours receives a significant penalty. We also note whether the bookmaker imposes withdrawal limits, minimum withdrawal amounts, or verification delays on first-time withdrawals.
What "Tested" Means
Every ranking is based on hands-on testing with a real, verified account. We deposit at least $200 into each bookmaker, place a minimum of 20 bets across different market types (H2H, line, player props, SGMs), and withdraw at least once. We test the mobile app on current-generation devices and note any performance issues.
We do not rely on screenshots, press releases, or bookmaker-supplied information. The testing is conducted by the Footy Bets editorial team, and all observations are documented. Rankings are reviewed and updated quarterly — at the start of each AFL season, at the mid-season bye, and at finals time.
How Scores Are Calculated
Each criterion is scored out of 10, then multiplied by its weighting:
- Odds Quality: score × 0.30
- Market Depth: score × 0.25
- SGM Builder: score × 0.20
- Mobile Experience: score × 0.15
- Payout Speed: score × 0.10
The weighted scores are summed to produce a final rating out of 10. This rating determines the ranking order on our Best AFL Betting Sites page.
